South African GASTROENTEROLOGY Review | Volume 17 Issue 3 2019
THE SOUTH AFRICAN GASTROENTEROLOGY REVIEW 2019 | ISSUE 3 | 38 GASTROENTEROLOGY FOUNDATION This trip was the 25th time that Prof. Paul Goldberg led a team to the Northern Cape. Originally the mission was to provide endoscopy support for the high–risk Lynch Syndrome family members who live there. In the quest to offer an internationally acceptable surveillance program for this group of patients, the team has grown significantly. As you can see from the group photo, 46 of us invaded the Northern Cape’s medical space. The 2019 team was made of 6 medical sub- groups, namely; • GIT doctors, nurses and equipment specialists • Gynaecologists and equipment specialists • Urologist • Anaesthetic team (doctors, nurses and equipment specialists) • Breast team (doctors, nurses and equipment specialists) • Genetic counsellors and co-ordinators The need for medical outreach in the Northern Cape Province and the partnerships created on this trip, are the cornerstone of the success of this amazing venture. Even though this trip was the last one that Paul Goldberg will ‘conduct’ from GSH and UCT soil, the solid support structures created over the years mean that the concept of taking specialist care to more remote centres is a reality. Good succession planning has meant that the next generation of specialists have been injected with a healthy dose of enthusiasm to take the goodwill forward. See Table 1, for endoscopy totals for the week and Table 2 for the Endoscopy pathology found. Great thanks go to all the funders. They not only assisted financially but also provided equipment and their expertise for the week. Thank you to ALL the role players.
